Damage Estimation Training (DET) Tube. A tool to help an inspector learn to estimate damage within a cylinder.

During an internal inspection of a cylinder the inspector needs to estimate the extent of damage within a cylinder. Pitting or corrosion within a cylinder needs to be measured to determine if the cylinder can remain in service. However, due to the restrictive openings, it is tough to insert a tool for an accurate measurement. The extent of damage is generally an estimate by the inspector using a Probe. The inspector will attach either a straight probe for estimating the damage on the bottom of the cylinder, or an angled tip to estimate damage on the side wall. The end of the probe is inserted in the damaged area, or drug across the damaged area, to try and assess the depth of damage.

The DET Tube can be used to mimic the depth of damage within a cylinder. The metal inserts within the tube have pre-drilled with 4 individual depths (.01/.02/.04/.06). There is an insert on the bottom and an insert on the side of the tube. The inspector can place the probe within the DET Tube and get a feeling on how the end of probe reacts with each pre-drilled hole. Once the inspector gets an idea on the resistance felt through the probe, and estimates the same resistance of the corrosion or damage within the cylinder.

The DET Tube is designed to be used during classes, or left in the inspection area. When an inspector locates damage within a cylinder, and uses a probe to assess that damage. The DET Tube can be used to help verify the damage depth located within the cylinder.

The DET Tube is another tool to help determine damage in hard to reach areas of a cylinder.
